Adoniram Judson:
A Gospel Worth Living and Dying For

 

  • Born in 1788 in Massachusetts
  • Arrived at Brown University in 1804; fell under the influence of a student, James Eames, a deist
  • Four years later had a “chance” encounter at an inn that changed his life
  • In 1808 dedicated of himself to God and soon joined a group of mission minded students at Andover Seminary
  • Commissioned with four others as a missionary by the Congregationalist Assembly
  • In 1812, on the voyage to India became convinced of baptism for believers
  • Arrived in India with his wife Ann after 112 day journey and both baptized a few months
  • They went to Burma despite the dangers where they spent three years just learning the language and four years until the first convert
  • Ten years after their arrival in Burma there was a church of 18 people
  • Publication of Burmese grammar and the Gospel of Matthew, then completed New Testament
  • Beginning of 1824 he was arrested and spent 21 months in prison, convicted as a spy
  • In 1826 his wife Ann died
  • In 1834 completed the Burmese Bible translation
  • In 1835 married Sarah, she died while traveling to America in 1845
  • In 1846 married Emily
  • He died in 1850 while traveling back to America; was buried at sea
