An Overview of Divine Election, Romans 9-11

Background: Paul writes this letter as Jews are allowed back into the city of Rome, thus creating potential tension between a Gentile led church and returning church leaders who are Jewish.  These three chapters deal with the struggle of the vast rejection of Christ by the Jewish people and why the church is rapidly becoming a Gentile church despite its Jewish origins.

  1. Why the Jewish Majority Stand Outside the Salvation Plan of God, Chapter 9
  2. Paul's brokenness over the Israelites without the Gospel
  3. God is the one who gets to decide
  4. God's choice for salvation is based on faith and not law
  5. God's choice for salvation on the basis of faith caused many Israelites to stumble over His plan

  1. The Gospel Offers Salvation to All Who Believe, Chapter 10
  2. Paul's desire for the salvation of the Israelites
  3. The message of salvation is obvious, plain, and clear
  4. Salvation comes from faith in Jesus Christ the Resurrected Lord
  5. God promised in His Word to send His message of salvation into all the world

III.    The Jewish People Are Still Part of God's Salvation Plan, Chapter 11

  1. God has not broken His promises to Israel, but has preserved a remnant
  2. For now, Gentiles have been brought into God's salvation plan
  3. God will bring Israel back into His salvation plan
