DL Moody: The Secret Power of the Holy Spirit

• Born in 1837 in Massachusetts
• Father died when he was four years old; mother moved him and his 8 siblings had to live away from home in order to have food and shelter
• At 17 took a job at his uncle’s shoe store in Boston
• Came to faith through the witness of a Sunday school teacher at the Congregational Church of Mount Vernon
• Started a Sunday School in Boston that grew to 650 students
• During the Civil War, he refused to serve in the military but spent his time ministering on the frontlines to the soldiers
• After the war he moved to Chicago and started a church
• In 1872 travelled to England for extensive evangelistic preaching ministry for three years
• Returned to US and continued his preaching along with his continued involvement in a variety of ministries
• Died in 1899 at the age of 62
