"God himself is present. God is the critical theatergoer, who looks on to see how the lines are spoken and how they are listened to...The speaker is then the prompter, and the listener stands openly before God...who in all truth acts before God." Soren Kierkegard

Definitions:

--

1.   Worship: To express honor and thanksgiving to God through individual acts, corporate gatherings or through works of service

--

The woman with the alabaster ointment

The disciples in Matthew 28 just before the Great Commission

The Church gathered together in the Book of Acts for Worship through the listening to the Word taught, breaking bread and doing good works

--

2.   Praise: To use words or music as an expression of worship

--

Often times in the Scripture praise is connected to outward expressions of words or music.

--

Psalm 57:7-11 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!...I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations.

--

3.   Honor: To respond to God with a proper understanding of who we are in relation to who He is

--

God is worthy of honor: Revelation 4 and 5

--

4.   Fear: To acknowledge the power and authority of God over all creation

--

Psalm 112:1 Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who greatly delights in His commandments.

--

Worship and praise connected with fear. This reverence or fear acknowledges the absolute power and authority over creation.

When we are driving and see a police car sitting on the side of the road, all of us likely do the same thing, we look at our speedometer to see if we are within the limits of the posted speed or if we are going to see flashing lights. This fear is proper because that police officer has the authority to pull us over and issue us a ticket. We may praise the police for their work. We may praise a teacher for his or her work. But there is in those cases also an acknowledgement of their authority. When I go to Michael's campus to eat lunch with him from time to time, the teacher who functions as the lunch room monitor for the day makes me exceedingly nervous. Why? Back to my days in school

--

5.   Exalt: To express with words and actions the lofty position and preeminence of God

--

Psalm 34:1-3 I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul will make its boast in the Lord...magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.

--

An acknowledgement of God's lofty status as the only true Sovereign of creation

--

6.   Magnify: To see God as great as He really is

--

Microscope versus a telescope

--

Glory, Glorify and Glorification as the Key to Worship (and all of life)

--

I.   The Glory of God: The Attributes of God, All that He is and all that He has done

--

Psalm 57:10-11 For Your lovingkindness is great to the heavens
And Your truth to the clouds. Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory be above all the earth.

--

II.   Glorifying God: The act of attributing glory through music, meditation, speaking, and praying to God all that He is and all that He has done

--

Psalm 86:9-10 All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And they shall glorify Your name. For You are great and do wondrous deeds; You alone are God.

--

Psalm 29:1-2 Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in holy array.

--

Luke 2:14-20 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”...The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

--

Matthew 5:16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

--

III. Glorification by God: The work of God to transform us into His image so that we are able to see His glory and to glorify Him forever in His presence

--

Romans 8:16-18 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
