I.    Messianic Language of the Old Testament

Psalm 2:1-12  1 Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing?

--

² The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, ³ “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!”

⁴ He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. ⁵ Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, ⁶ “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

⁷ “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. ⁸ ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. ⁹ ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, you shall shatter them like earthenware.’”

¹⁰ Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. ¹¹ Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners;

Isaiah 42:1-4 “Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. ² “He will not cry out or raise His voice, Nor make His voice heard in the street.

³ “A bruised reed He will not break And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. ⁴ “He will not be disheartened or crushed until He has established justice in the earth;

Isaiah 49:13 Shout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth! Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people and will have compassion on His afflicted.

II.   The Surprising Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53

--

Isaiah 52:13-53:1 ¹³ Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted. ¹⁴ Just as many were astonished at you, My people, so His appearance was marred more than any man and His form more than the sons of men.

¹⁵ Thus He will sprinkle many nations, kings will shut their mouths on account of Him; For what had not been told them they will see, and what they had not heard they will understand. Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

Isaiah 53:2-3 ² For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.

³ He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

III.  The Divine Purpose of the Sufferings of Isaiah 53

--

Isaiah 52:1-3 Awake, awake, clothe yourself in your strength, O Zion; Clothe yourself in your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city...For thus says the Lord, “You were sold for nothing and you will be redeemed without money.”

Isaiah 53:4-6 ⁴ Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. ⁵ But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

⁶ All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

IV.   The Specific Prophecies of Isaiah 53

--

Isaiah 53:7-9 ⁷ He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.

⁸ By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?

⁹ His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
