The Sermon on the Mount

Kingdom Citizens and the Law; Matthew 5:19-20

I.       Christ and the Law, Matthew 5:17-18

A.      His High View of Scripture (see Matthew 4:3-4, Matthew 26:51-56)

B.      His fulfillment of Every Aspect of the Law (see Matthew 3:13-15, Luke 22:19-20, Matthew 27:50-51, Hebrews 10:8-14)

II.      Kingdom Citizens and the Law, Matthew 5:19-20

A.      Old Testament Laws that are Explicitly Set Aside in the New Testament: Dietary Restrictions (see Mark 7:18-19, Acts 11:1-11), Sacrificial System (see Matthew 26:51-56, Hebrews 7-10), Special Observance of Days (see Matthew 12:6-8, Romans 14:5-9, I Corinthians 5:6-8, Galatians 4:9-11), Circumcision (see Galatians 5:2-3, Philippians 3:1-16)

B.      Old Testament Law that is Broadly Set Aside in the New Testament (see Acts 15, Romans 7:1-6, I Corinthians 9:19-20, Galatians 3:24-25)

III.     Kingdom Citizens and New Testament Commandments, Matthew 5:19-20

If Jesus completely fulfills the Old Testament Laws, are there any commandments still applicable to kingdom citizens?

A.      Every Old Testament Law that still applies to the Church is restated in the New Testament (see I Corinthians 10:14, Matthew 6:9, Matthew 5:21-48, Colossians 3:9, Romans 13:8-10, I Corinthians 6:9-10)

B.      Loving God and loving others is the greatest expression of obeying the New Testament commandments for kingdom citizens (see Matthew 7:12, Matthew 22:36-40, John 13:34-35, Romans 13:8-10, Galatians 5:14, Galatians 6:2, James 2:8)

C.      Affirming and obeying is a mark of greatness in the kingdom (see Matthew 7:24-27, Matthew 28:18-20)
