Passage: Romans 13:8-10

Speaker: Daniel Sweet

I.     Owe Nothing to Anyone…
Is this a prohibition against any type of borrowing?

  1. The Old Testament discusses the evils of failing to pay back loans and the evils for overcharging for loans (See Psalm 37:21, Leviticus 25:36, Proverbs 28:8, Nehemiah 5)
  2. Jesus uses parables that assume a financial system with loans and repayments  (See Matthew 18:23-35, Luke 7:40-43, Luke 16:1-9)
  3. The verb is in the Greek tense, meaning “do not keep on owing”
  4. NIV captures the idea with “let no debt remain outstanding”
  5. That said, there is still great wisdom in minimizing or eliminating all debt (Proverbs 22:7, Proverbs 22:26)

Conclusion: Christians must repay all obligations they incur promptly and in accordance with the terms of the contract.

II.    Instead We Embrace The Debt That We Are To Love Our Neighbor

  1. If we love our neighbor, we will protect our neighbor’s marriage
  2. If we love our neighbor, we will protect our neighbor’s life
  3. If we love our neighbor, we will protect our neighbor’s property
  4. If we love our neighbor, we will protect our own heart from envy of their marriage, life and property
  5. Love does not ignore the law, love fulfills the law

Conclusion: Unlike our financial debts, Christians can never love enough to complete our obligations to others
