Come Alive

Redemption,Regeneration, Reconciliation, Resurrection

  1. Introduction (Header Slide – Come Alive - Redeemed)
  • New series, for the next four weeks we will discuss the work brought about through the death and resurrection of Christ in our lives
  • In other words, we will look at four aspects of Christ’s work in the life of believers
  • Meaning of Redemption (Ransom): To purchase or to buy back
  • Examples: land, houses, slaves, captives
  • We see this in the book of Ruth and the redemption of land by Boaz, which includes a marriage commitment to the land owners widow, Ruth
  • We see this in the book of Hosea: The picture of our relationship to God as seen in Hosea is as a husband whose spouse has become engaged in prostitution
  • In both of these examples, the idea presents God as viewing His relationship to us as a husband to a wife
  • Hosea is to God, as Gomer is to Israel, as Adultery is to Idolatry, as Children are to Judgment
  • Hosea’s relationship to Gomer is a cry from the heart of God that they are not level that the standard by which they are judging is wrong and cannot be trusted
  • Hosea comes onto the scene in dramatic fashion as an attempt to shake the people at their core, to help them realize the danger they have put themselves in
  • Hosea 3:1 sets the tone of mercy and forgiveness in the face of judgment (Slide 2)
  • Hosea is told to go a purchase Gomer
  • We don’t know why Gomer is for sale, maybe her prostitution has led her to this
  • Three ways this was a very expensive purchase by Hosea
  • First, Slave Price of Gomer
  • Hosea must pay out of His resources to buy Gomer back
  • Whether this was particular expensive on a prophets salary or not I do not know
  • Hosea has three children in the home and is probably struggling to make ends meet
  • This may have pushed Hosea to use his complete and full resources
  • Second, Public Scorn and Ridicule
  • He has already been in the public’s eye, prophesying about God’s judgment of Israel
  • Now he is a very public figure, with a very public problem that his wife is directly involved in the behaviors he has preached against
  • Third, Personal Relationship
  • Imagine what that first night in the home must have been like, the tension and long periods of silence, the cost of a heart that is broken
  • But God tells Hosea, go bring her back into your home and love her even though she betrayed you

·         We find these same three paid by Christ in His redemption of us from sin and shame

  1. Elements of Redemption
  • Captives or slaves: sinners under the bondage of sin and death (all people)
  • Redeemer (go’el): an agent that acts on behalf of the captives
  • Redemption Price: the cost for providing release of the captives

·         The initial discussion of redemption in Scripture goes back to the Exodus account

·         Read Exodus 6:6 (Slide 3)

·         Rescue through the exertion of power

·         Birds at Michael’s baseball practice illustration

·         Read Exodus 13:15 (Slide 4)

·         This picture of redemption and the use of God’s power culminates in the last of the ten plagues – the substitution for the first born

  1. Redemption as a Motif for Salvation:
  • Reference to salvation in general: The work of God to free His people from bondage
  • Reference to the work of Christ: The work of God through the death of His Son to free all believers from His judgment of our sin
  • Which is why Christ says of Himself in the New Testament
  • Read Mark 10:45 (Slide 5)
  • It is not a forgiveness without relational costs, the rebellious people come home to the place we once mocked
  • That leads us to the passage for today

·         Read Galatians 4:5 (Slide 6)

·         Read Titus 2:14 (Slide 7)

·         Redeeming from something, the bondage of the law, the judgment of the Law

·         Redeeming us to something, adopted children, God’s own possession

·         First, there is the price of sin

·         Second, Christ bore the public shame and humiliation and ridicule in order to redeem us

·         Third, Christ bore the price of personal relationship in order to redeem us

·         Maybe we don’t sense it because we have grown cold and calloused to the tension it puts in the heart of God to turn our backs on Him

·         Feel the weight of our chains

·         Remember our chains

·         This is why God put in the life of Israel the constant redemption motif, this was God’s constant reminder as to the weight of their bondage in Israel and the price He paid for their lives

·         They belonged to Him, they were His people for He had purchased them

·         In Hosea, Israel had turned to idolatry and God says that He will buy them back from that as well

·         This gives a picture of His amazing ability to forgive and to restore

·         It is not an empty forgiveness, it cost Him the death of His Son

·         It is not a forgiveness without scorn, it cost the Son public humiliation and pain

  1. Exposition of I Peter 1:14-21
  • I.            As obedient children… Read I Peter 1:14-16 (Slide 8)

o   Do not be conformed to this world, I Peter 1:14

o   but be conformed to the holiness of God, I Peter 1:15-16

  • II.          As children of God the Father who judges impartially…

o   Conduct yourselves in fear, I Peter 1:17 (Slide 9)

  • III.         Knowing what price your Father paid for you… (Slide 10)

o   Not with perishable things, I Peter 1:18

o   But with the crucifixion of His own perfect son, I Peter 1:19

  • IV.         According to God’s plan… (Slide 11)

o   The work of Christ has always been known by God, even though He recently carried it out, I Peter 1:20

o   This plan gives believers in God faith and hope in God through the resurrected Christ, I Peter 1:21

14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,  15but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;  16because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."  17If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;  18knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,  19but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.  20For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you  21who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
