Notes:
Background: Some of the teachings presented in I Corinthians 7 come from Christ Himself and some come from Paul. There are issues Paul addresses here because they deal with specific situations that have emerged within the church at Corinth.
1. From the teachings of Jesus, "Not I, but the Lord...", See Matthew 19:3-12
2. From the teachings of Paul, "I say, not the Lord,...", See I Corinthians 7:40
3. Some parallels between Matthew 19 and I Corinthians 7
a. If married, stay married
b. If divorced, a person cannot remarry
c. If you are single, for the sake of ministry it is best to remain single
d. However, not everyone is able to remain single, in which case marriage is better than immorality
4. Verse 8 parallels with Verse 10
a. If single, remain...
b. If married, remain...
I Corinthians 7:10-11
I. Christ Himself Says, If Married, Stay Married
II. If a married person leaves (divorces)...
A. They should remain single OR
B. Reconcile with their spouse
Note: Jesus also gives an exception for divorce and remarriage in the case of infidelity, See Matthew 19:9
