Psalm 119:49-64

--

49 Remember the word to Your servant, in which You have made me hope.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your word has revived me.

--
51 The arrogant utterly deride me, yet I do not turn aside from Your law.
52 I have remembered Your ordinances from of old, O Lord,
And comfort myself.

--
53 Burning indignation has seized me because of the wicked, Who forsake Your law.
54 Your statutes are my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

--
55 O Lord, I remember Your name in the night, and keep Your law.
56 This has become mine, that I observe Your precepts.

--

57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.
58 I sought Your favor with all my heart; Be gracious to me according to Your word.

--
59 I considered my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hastened and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

--
61 The cords of the wicked have encircled me, But I have not forgotten Your law.
62 At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You because of Your righteous ordinances.

--
63 I am a companion of all those who fear You, and of those who keep Your precepts.
64 The earth is full of Your lovingkindness, O Lord; Teach me Your statutes.

God Is Speaking! Are We Listening? The Authority of the Bible: Read, Study and Live Under the Authority of God's Revelation, James 1:18-27

--

Revelation is the content of God's disclosure of Himself in the Bible.

Inspiration is the method that God used to provide His revelation.

--

Interpretation is the work done by believers to rightly understand and apply God's revelation.

Application is the pursuit of the believer to live according to God's revelation in order to please Him in all that we think, say, and do.

--

Psalm 119:1 How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.
--

Psalm 119:59-60 I considered my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies. I hastened and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

--

I.     Hear the Word, James 1:18-19, 22

--

James 1:18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

--

James 1:19-20 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

--

James 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

--

II.     Receive the Word, James 1:21

--

James 1:21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

--

I Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.

--

James 1:21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

--

     A.   Put aside sin

     B.   Be humble

--

We would prefer write the entire law of God on a stone table by inscribing it with our bare finger than to write one letter of the law of God on their heart. John Owen

--

III.   Do the Word, James 1:22-25

--

James 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

--

     A.   Don't just hear it

--

James 1:23-24 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.

--

     B.   Believe it

--

James 1:25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

--

     C.   Live it

--

James 1:26-27 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

--

Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

--

II Timothy 4:1-2 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

--

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter."

--

Matthew 7:12 In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

--

Matthew 7:28-29 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
