God Is Speaking! Are We Listening?
The Formation of the Bible: Read, Study and Live with Understanding of God's Revelation, II Timothy 3:16-17
--
I. Context
--
II Timothy 3:14-15 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
--
A. "Timothy, Continue in the Sacred Writings"
B. The Sacred Writings give "Wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus"
--
II. "All Scripture" Both Old and New Testaments
--
A. Old Testament, Psalm 19, Psalm 119
--
Psalm 19:7-8 The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
--
Psalm 119:13-16 With my lips I have told of all the ordinances of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts and regard Your ways. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word.
--
B. The Testimony of Jesus, John 17:17, Matthew 22:31-32, John 14:10, Matthew 7:24-27
--
Matthew 22:31-32 But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
--
Luke 24:44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
--
Luke 24:45-47 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
--
Matthew 16:15-17 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
--
John 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth."
--
John 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.
--
John 16:13-15 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come...
--
...He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
--
Matthew 7:24-25 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
--
Matthew 7:26-27 Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
--
C. The Testimony of the New Testament Writers, II Peter 3:14-16, I Timothy 5:18, Jude 17-18
--
I Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
--
I Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
--
II Peter 3:15-16 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.
--
III. "Is Inspired by God" God-Breathed Out the Scripture
--
II Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

The Doctrine of Revelation and Inspiration
Revelation is the content. It is God's disclosure of His truth.
Inspiration is the means or method that God used to provide His revelation.
--
In Revelation God makes Himself known.
In Inspiration God takes the revelation and puts it in the minds of human authors and then God guides and protects His revelation as those human authors put His revelation on the page of Scripture.
--
Inspiration does not eliminate or destroy the human author's own humanity, personality, thoughts, understanding and attitudes all the while protecting the words so that what the authors wrote in their own words, culture and language were the very words of God.
--
A. Spoken by God, Matthew 4:4
--
Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
--
B. Through Humans Authors, Galatians 1:12, "The word of the LORD came to" over 100 times in the Old Testament
--
Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.
--
C. By the work of the Holy Spirit, II Peter 1:20-21
--
II Peter 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
--
D. In a Variety of Ways, Hebrews 1:1-2
--
Hebrews 1:1-2 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
--
Revelation 22:18-19 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.
--
IV. God Spoke It for a Purpose, "Is Profitable"
--
II Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
--
A. For Teaching, Something we should know
B. For Reproof, Something we should stop
C. For Correction, Something we should change
D. For Training, Something we should improve
--
V. Therefore, "Preach the Word", II Timothy 4:1-5
--
II Timothy 4:1-2 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
--
--
Psalm 119:17-32
17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word. 18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law.
--
19 I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times.
--
21 You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments. 22 Take away reproach and contempt from me, for I observe Your testimonies.
--
23 Even though princes sit and talk against me, your servant meditates on Your statutes. 24 Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors.
--
25 My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Your word. 26 I have told of my ways, and You have answered me; Teach me Your statutes.
--
27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so I will meditate on Your wonders. 28 My soul weeps because of grief; Strengthen me according to Your word.
--
29 Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law. 30 I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Your ordinances before me.
--
31 I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame! 32 I shall run the way of Your commandments, For You will enlarge my heart.
