Background: The Sermon on the Mount and Repentance

  • “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17
  • Repentance is the heart attitude in preparation for the kingdom
  • The first blessing in the Sermon on the Mount connects the repentant heart to the rest of the sermon, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”

Exposition of Matthew 5:4

  1. Blessed: Happiness or inward joy that comes from God
  2. Those who mourn: brokenness, devastation, heartbreak
  • Mourning over spiritual poverty
  • Mourning over the broken relationships due to our spiritual poverty
  • Mourning over the physical ramifications due to our spiritual poverty

III.     They shall be comforted

  • God draws near to those who are suffering, Psalm 34:18
  • God enters into our suffering through the cross of Christ, Isaiah 53
  • God redeems our suffering for His glory and our everlasting joyous reward, II Corinthians 4:17-18

God comforts us through our suffering so that we would comfort others, II Corinthians 1:3-7
