What Christ Accomplished in His Suffering, I Peter 3:18-22
I. Christ Died for Sins
- Once for all
- The just for the unjust
- To bring us to God
- He was put to death in His physical body, but He was made alive in the spirit (Spirit?)
II. Christ Went and Made Proclamation
- To spirits in prison
- To spirits who once were disobedient
- During the construction of the ark
Excursus:
What is the nature of these spirits?
Fallen angels during the time of Noah
Sinful people during the time of Noah
What is the nature of their sin?
Angels who encouraged the line of Seth to marry from the line of Cain
Angels who married humans and had children
Timing of Christ’s proclamation?
During the time of Noah
After His crucifixion and before His resurrection
After His resurrection
III. The Example of Noah
- Small minority of believers
- Persecuted by the vast majority of unbelievers
- Preserved by God
- Preserved through water (See parallel idea in I Corinthians 10:1-2)
IV.The Analogy of Noah’s Flood to Believers’ Baptism
- As Noah was preserved by God through water
- So now, the believer is also preserved by God through water
- Noah trusted that God would save him and the Ark provided the external evidence of his faith
- Believers trust that God will save us and baptism provides the external evidence of our faith in Christ
