Day 49
“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-16
Cautious Steps
“Be careful how you walk” in this world filled with spiritual darkness. We are children of light but we live in a world with “world forces of this spiritual darkness.” (Ephesians 6:12) Anyone walking in a dark place must focus on every step. Like a hiker on a dangerous climb, each move must be purposeful because of the treacherous environment. Like a child carrying a plate full of food, a parent implores, “Be careful.” Be careful. Be wise. Each decision must be carefully considered because of our environment. The world lives according to the “prince of the power of the air.” (Ephesians 2:3) The prince of the power of the air, our adversary the devil, seeks our demise. Paul implored the church to be wise “because the days are evil.”
Making the Most of Your Time
The literal translation of “making the most of your time” is “redeeming your time.” “Redeeming” means to buy back or to purchase. We use similar language today. If someone seems to be stalling in order to delay a decision, we might say to them, “you’re just buying time.” In this case, the idiom appears to be focused on maximizing opportunities for doing what is right or good. Unwise living wastes time and opportunities to do what is good. Unwise living, in this evil age, fails to do what pleases the Lord.
Suggested Prayer: Lord, give me wisdom with my every step. Protect my eyes from dwelling on evil. Shield my mind from focusing on those ideas which wars against Your holy standards. Guard my mouth from speaking any word that dishonors you.
